If you push the sliders even higher, you’ll see reds, yellows and browns as well. So if your brush color is pale blue, for example, the higher the jitter count in those sliders, the more variation of the color blue you will see – you will see green and purple as well.
If you wish to have a variation of the chosen color for your brush, you can choose Color Dynamics and edit those Hue and Saturation sliders and you will notice that your brush will put out more than one color in a similar color theme. At the bottom of this window, you will see a live preview of what your brush will look like as you make those adjustments. The different settings allow you to play with the size, angle, color, rotation, opacity, and spacing of your brush. You can either choose similar settings from this tutorial, or you can experiment and achieve your own effects according to what kind of brush you would like to have. You can also click on every feature individually to bring up sliders that allow you to play with the settings to create different looks. The features we need to check are Shape Dynamics, Scattering, and Transfer (smoothing should automatically be selected.)Ĭhoose these presets by clicking in the small box next to each.
Now we are going to edit the brush presets so that the brush will create a scatter pattern over the page. It’s that simple, now you have a new brush of your own design, and you can find it in the Brushes menu: go to the main menu, choose Window > Brush to open the brush palette. This will bring up a small window asking you to define a name for your new brush, and this name can be whatever you wish, but it’s a good idea to name it something that relates to the brush itself so it is easier to find in your brush palette, rather than a generic name ie I named the brush “balloon” rather than “new brush 1”. Once your shape is selected on the page (make sure you are on the shape layer), go to the menu and select Edit > Define Brush Preset. You can choose any shape you like for this exercise. For the brush, in this example I used a Photoshop shape of a balloon, and drew that onto the page with a fill color and no outline. To begin, open Photoshop and make a new blank template by going to File > New and choose the size of your page. This scatter effect is both a wonderful time saver and a great way to quickly design an impressive illustration, or border or frame. In today’s tip of the week, we are going to go through the process of making a brush from scratch using Photoshop, and then modifying the brush preset to create a pattern of scattering.
